Yep, Black Friday also doubles as Brown Friday—the busiest day of the year for plumbers.
Thanks to Dan Lewis’s Now I Know newsletter, I know now that Friday after Thanksgiving, in addition to being the biggest day of the year for blowout sales, is also the biggest day of the year for blowout plumbing emergencies.
Roto Rooter plumbing service says that today is their busiest day of the year for emergency house calls—but not necessarily due to all of America crapping their brains out at the same time. Apparently there are a few factors that contribute to post-Thanksgiving plumbing disasters.
First is that Thanksgiving, being a food explosion and entirely focused on the kinds of foods that produce grease, wreaks havoc with drains. Apparently millions of people learn the hard way every year that you’re not supposed to dump grease down your drain—it hardens and clogs the sink.
Second is that being a secular holiday pretty much everyone, including plumbers, celebrates it, meaning a record number of clogged drains that have to wait until Friday for a house call.
And yes—the body count per household/ toilet goes up, increasing the chances of bathroom clogging, which contributes to Brown Friday, but apparently not as much as sink clogging. So for better or worse, now you know—if you find yourself waiting at home for an emergency plumber instead of suiting up in riot gear and heading out for Black Friday deals, you’re just contributing to a different part of the economy that is also booming today.
